Reminder!

Tomorrow is our feast at the Torstensen Center. The property is located on Cook Rd. From Telegraph Rd, turn left onto Wiegert, then left on Cook. This will wrap up the Pilgrim unit we have been working on all month. We've been learning SO much and doing lots of reading and writing!  Our feast will begin at 1:00, and we will leave at 2:30 to return to school. Thank you to those of you that sent food for our feast or volunteered to help with set up and clean up. I couldn't do it without you!

Pilgrims!

We have been working very hard on our Pilgrim unit! We are learning a lot about how hard it was for the Pilgrims to make it in the new land. It's also been interesting to see which groups work together and which groups have too many "leaders". We are all looking forward to our feast next week, but I'm i desperate need of your help! We have plenty of drinks and corn, but nothing else for our feast. If you are able to donate any of the other items on our list, please let me know as soon as possible. In order for this to be successful, we really need your help!

It's Concert Time!

Tonight's the night! We have been working hard in the classroom and in music. First you will be entertained by our wonderful third graders performing at the high school, then we will return to the elementary school where we will share our spooky stories and scary projects. Remember to be at the high school no later than 6:10! I'm looking forward to seeing you tonight!! In the meantime, here's a sneak peek of tonight's performance.

Fun at the Torstensen Property

We spent our morning out at the ICF property. It was a beautiful day to be outside! We went on a hike, and learned about animal tracks and different plants. There were lots of animal pelts for us to see and touch too. We also got to use the binoculars, which was a first for many of us. But the best part was when we went on the Scat Hunt! Be sure to ask your child to tell you about it!! They did really well with the identification process! It was a great trip! We are hoping to go back this winter to look for animal tracks in the snow.

Umbrellas for Peace

What an exciting day we had! Today was the day for our Peace Parade. We lined up by grade level, opened our umbrellas, and paraded down Main Street. We had so much fun! What a wonderful way to commemorate such a tragic day. After lunch, we read "The Little Chapel That Stood". Then we talked about what the story meant, and how it is important to remember and honor our heroes.

We finished up MAP testing, so hopefully we can get into our routine a little better now. Yesterday I sent home login information for Xtra Math. I am asking that this become part of your child's nightly homework routine. They are struggling a bit with remembering basic facts quickly and accurately. We are going to move very quickly from addition and subtraction to multiplication, so this extra nightly practice will help tremendously! And don't forget that tomorrow is our Peace Parade with the awesome umbrellas your kiddos have painted! Parade starts at 9:00...if you're free, come watch this amazing parade.

We've Been Busy!

It has been a busy week in third grade! Sometimes our short weeks are the craziest. We are finishing up our college pennants, and tomorrow are writing our paragraphs to go with them. These will be displayed in the hallway, and the writing will be shared in class. We are also doing some grade level assessment in reading and spelling. In addition, we started MAP testing today. We will test tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday as well. Hopefully, once that's done, we will be able to settle into our routine a little better. To that end, we forgot Thursday Communicators today! That means this week they will be Friday Communicators. Thanks for understanding!

Our First Week

We have almost made it through our first full week of school! Tomorrow will be a busy day for us. In addition to Unity Day, we have math, language, and science quizzes. We had Friday quizzes last year, the only difference is that we are including science this year. Daily homework this year will include a vocabulary paper and a math word problem. Remember, no school on Monday. Enjoy your long weekend!

Welcome Back!

Our first full week of school is off to a great start! We are diving right in to our daily routine. You probably noticed that your child had homework already tonight. We will have vocabulary and word problem homework every night. Your child should be able to be completely independent with this work. If there are struggles, please let me know so I can help them. You've probably also noticed our "College Project" by now. Your kiddos are so excited about this! Whether they go to college or not, I want them all to start thinking about it, and know they can do it!!

Happ St. Patrick's Day

We had a surprise waiting for us when we got to school this morning. A naughty leprechaun had been running amok in our classroom! He certainly created lots of chaos. But it was my lucky day! My kiddos worked hard and cleaned up the mess he made. I'm afraid we will find green glitter for weeks to come though!

Party Time!

We had lots of fun at our Valentine's Party! Instead of cards, we made posters for our friends to sign. I was overwhelmed with the kind, thoughtful sentiments my kiddos wrote about their friends. I am so blessed with such a caring class!! Many thanks to the moms and dads who brought treats, drinks, and crafts to make this a special day for us!

Happy Valentine's Day!

We are busy, busy, busy today!! There's lots of love in our room today. We started our day with some Valentine Graphing, wrote about the people/things we love, made beautiful cards for mom and dad, and will wrap up with our party. Happy Valentine's Day to my amazing students and their wonderful parents!! Much love to you all!

Fairy Tale Projects

We have been working at warp speed to try to finish our fairy tale projects! All these days off have made our lives miserable when it comes to preparing for our Open House, and I truly appreciate the help and support you are giving your child at home. We have been organizing, writing, proof reading, and writing some more! Many students asked if they. Oils type their papers, and that is absolutely wonderful! I had hoped we could do that at school, but due to time constraints, it just didn't happen. So your child may type or write their final paper. Final copy of stories and projects are both due Monday!! Our concert is at 6:30 on Tuesday followed by Open House at the elementary school. All projects will be displayed in the cafeteria. I'm looking forward to seeing you then. Enjoy your cold, snowy weekend!!

Monday, February 3, 2014

It seems like forever since we've been in school on a Monday! We have lots of catching up to do. Counting money is our focus in math right now and we found some fun Smart Board activities to help us practice! We are also working hard on our Fairy Tale/Fractured Fairy Tale unit. Today we read The Princess and the Pea and The Princess and the Bowling Ball. Our rough drafts for our own tales are coming along slowly, but surely. I'm sure they'll be perfect in time for our concert and Open House next week. Remember, projects are due next Monday, February 10. Fingers crossed for a full week of school!
